M5 Add XY Data Points and Geocoding
This week's lab had us practice our skills utilizing our own created XY data which we cleaned up and then had us project the data correctly onto a map. We also gathered data from the Florida Department of Educational School addresses for Manatee County and Tiger line Shapefiles: US Counties and Roads to help us learn more about geocoding.
We gathered data from our lab instructions and entered it into a new excel spreadsheet with proper field names in the title. We then took the coordinate data provided and used excel shortcuts to help fill out the rest of the table by splitting the coordinate data into degrees, minutes and seconds in the table by also applying decimal degrees. After we took our data and added it into a new ArcPro project and correctly displayed the information by using the XY Point Data tool. Lastly, we used the Project tool to change the output coordinate system to correctly display the data.
Our Geocoding lab had us gathering data from Florida Department of Educational School addresses for Manatee County and Tiger line Shapefiles: US Counties and Roads and utilizing the export features tool after selecting specific features to create a new layer. This layer was to help us narrow down a broad amount of information into the Manatee County area including defining which schools were located there. We created a locator tool to help us in the process of geocoding by utilizing the table and the street address along with specifying different directions from the road. After creating the locator tool, we opened the geocoding table and began to match our schools up to their street names within manatee county. We checked towards the end for any outliers and manually geocoded these points with help from Google Earth. After all the points were Geocoded, we created a AGOL Webmap with a description to be shared within our organization that can be viewed by the link included above!
