Module 2: LULC GIS5027
This week's lab saw us utilizing Land Use / Land Classification (LULC) methods over an area in Pacagoula, MS. We used a two-digit identification code after digitizing the imagery to identify features we saw within the aerial imagery. After classifying the land in our images and color-coating them so show our selections, we used In-Situ data collection through Google Earth to aid in our accuracy assessment of the classified lands.
For myself in particular, the assessment showed an 80% accuracy in identifying the land use, with some error with utilities and the occasional "hidden" church or home.
This exercise demonstrated the need for In-Situ data collection as interpreting aerial imagery can only provide so much information. As the professor stated, we could have spent the rest of semester digitizing the land use for a completely accurate LULC map, however, such a task would require laborious work to be done.
