Module 3: ERDAS GIS5027
This week's lab had us utilizing a new program called ERDAS Imagine and ArcPro together to create the above map. ERDAS allowed us to view and manipulate raster imagery provided to accurately display this area in the State of Washington.
The AVHRR imagery along with LANDSAT imagery allowed us to view the differences in spatial resolution between similar images and how that could be used to perform analysis on a particular area.
Data storage is a big factor when taking many images with many bands, so having a low spatial resolution may be ideal when looking at large areas such as mountain ranges. As we saw in this lab, however, low spatial resolution does not help when trying to identify a parking lot let alone the cars inside of it. The tradeoff between spatial resolution and storage is a difficult choice, but not if you understand the MMU of what you are mapping.
Overall, this lab was a lot of fun as we got to see the various ways raster imagery can be used in this course and in life. I look forward to being able to manipulate the imagery in the future for a project, however I am content with so far learning how to calculate fields and use ERDAS to compute the areas of different signatures!
